From the Pastor’s Desk
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Philippians 2:13 13for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
As I begin to write for the fall newsletter, it is 8:30 pm on Tuesday August 23 and the outside temperature reads 29 degrees Celsius. The reported high today was 37.2 – the hottest it’s been on August 23 for seventy years. My car temperature gauge was reading 41 degrees at one point and I was very glad of air conditioning. Before long we will face another season and we will be adjusting our thermostats from cooling to heating – keeping the air “conditioned”.
Over the summer our sign has read “This church is prayer conditioned.” Through prayer conditioning God works in us, enabling or conditioning us to will and to work for God’s good pleasure. Some of the prayer conditioned things that are happening and in planning stages for the next season are:
Groups: Frauenverein, Women of the Church, Choir, Worship Committee, Golden Agers and Church Council begin meeting.
Study: -Call to Spiritual Renewal - Seven sessions will be held on Thursday evenings beginning Sept 22: Pray, Read, Worship, Study, Serve, Give and Tell – come join this “prayer conditioning” to deepen your relationship with God and to ask what God is enabling or “conditioning” us to will and work. -There has been an expressed interest in Youth Group and Sunday School. Come to the planning meeting after worship on Sept 11. With prayer conditioning we are seeking leaders and participants.
Worship Sept 11-Back to School blessing of back packs – invite your kids, grandkids and neighbours and discussion on the results of the 2011 ELCIC National Convention -Youth and Sunday School planning mtg after worship Sept 18-CLWR Sunday- special guest appearance by Harry Held Sept 25-joint service for B2CS Back to Church Sunday with BBQ and fellowship– invite someone back to church with prayer conditioning – resources will be available each week Oct 2 Ray St. Germain & Brothers on a Journey will bring the good news in story and song Oct 9 Thanksgiving for all God has given US to will and to work for God’s good pleasure Oct 16 Worship with healing Oct 23 Worship Oct 30 Reformation Sunday Nov 6 All Saints-joint service/pot luck & special guest Bishop Elaine Sauer Nov 13 Restorative Justice week Nov 20 Christ the King Sunday And then it will be another season – Advent
God is at work in us, enabling - prayer conditioning us both to will and to work for God’s good pleasure. With prayer conditioned hearts and minds let us move forward into the warmth of the autumn season with all that God provides for good worship, good service to God and neighbour and good fellowship at Church of the Cross.
My prayer continues to be that we be prayer conditioned into spiritual renewal and to serve God and our neighbours with glad and joyful hearts.
Your sister in Christ,
Pastor Kolleen
Property Committee: has not been on vacation over the summer. They have been sprucing up a lot of areas – the shrubbery has been trimmed, the front doors varnished and the pastor’s office redecorated. There has been a recommendation that the shrubbery be further trimmed to discourage unwanted activities on the church property. Please let Merv, Arno or Edwin know what you think.
Prairie Fire is returning to Lutheran Church of the Cross this fall. They will be rehearsing on Thursday evenings in the lower hall and storing equipment in room 4. We hope to see and hear Prairie Fire sometime soon.
Finances: Last spring Church Council had approved that a quarterly news letter be published including the financial picture to date. So this is how it looks as of the end of July Income: Jan. 1–Jul. 31/11 $87,209.37 Expenditures: Jan. 1-Jul. 31/11 $99,427.46 Short Fall $12,218.09
We know that over the summer months giving usually drops off, but God remains faithful and continues to provide for our needs. We also know that God’s people respond to God’s grace with thankful and generous hearts so that the shortfall will be greatly reduced. Thank you and God bless you for your continued support. Monthly Financial Statements are available to anyone wishing one by contacting the Church Office or the Treasurer.
Prayers: We are working on a prayer cycle of our members. The hope is to establish a listing of birth & or baptismal dates and anniversaries as well memorial dates of those who have passed away. As this prayer cycle is being formed, please let the office know of any errors or omissions. We hope that this will deepen our prayer commitment for one another.
This month we are trying for birthdates. We celebrate life with those who celebrate birthdays and those who celebrate lives that are no longer present with us.
